Quote of the Week - Week of July 19

A weekly feature highlighting the best quotes on TV as picked by the SpoilerTV team. We'd love to hear your picks too so please sound off in the comments below.

Agents of SHIELD -
1. Coulson: “Being trapped in a time loop, watching my friends die, helpless to stop it… it's not some time-space anomaly. It's a damn metaphor. This is my life now.” Daisy: “Does it not occur to you that I might know something about watching my friend die over and over again?” Coulson: “This is different.” Daisy: “Is it?” Coulson: “I will watch all of you die, one by one. Everyone I love.” (Maria Sol)
2. Daisy: “Does it hurt?” Enoch: “It does... a bit. But it's not the physical pain that troubles me. I am acutely aware that in my thousands of years observing humans, I never used to feel lonely. I have been alone many times. To be candid, I preferred it. But it wasn't until I met this particular team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that being alone meant… feeling lonely. And I don't care for it.” (Maria Sol)
3. Daisy: “Enoch… the team will carry on the mission. We will survive because of you. Thank you. Enoch: “You are most welcome. But, Agent Johnson, while your friends will indeed survive, the team will not.” Daisy: “What do you mean?” Enoch: “I have seen the future. Carry on this mission and cherish it, for it will be your last mission together.” (Maria Sol)
4. Enoch: “This is the nature of family, isn't it? I have seen it countless times on countless worlds. People arrive, so we celebrate, and people leave us, so we grieve. We do what we can with the time in between, but the cycle is always there. No one escapes it. Not even me.” Coulson: “Which means you're not alone. You're a part of that cycle.” Daisy: “Like every other living thing.” (Maria Sol)

The Alienist -
1. Byrnes: “I am surprised, Miss Howard, a lady of your bearin' should be participatin' in such hooliganism and lawlessness.” Sara - "A little rebellion now and then is a good thing, Mr.Byrnes.” Byrnes: “The words of anarchists and agitators.” Sara: “They're the words of Thomas Jefferson, Mr. Byrnes.” (Folie-lex)
2. Sara: “Should I have need for an alienist, I would not hesitate to ask Dr.Kreizler for hsi help and insight. but what the Senora requires now, Elizabeth, is an expert in the procedural method of criminal detection, because there is always a trail no matter the criminal's stealth or genius. And if you still hesitate to consider me professionally, I will remind you of the prejudice against our sex that could impede this investigation. Does it not take a woman to know that a woman who has lost a child is neither hysterical nor irrational and that she has cause to be as she is? That she must be heard? You need a detective, Senora, and a woman such as I with the resources and the experience. I see your pain. I see your suffering. And I care. I care deeply.” (Folie-lex)
3. Byrnes: “See, I make it my habit to keep myself informed. I read. I read the Greeks, I read the Latins, but the Chinese... the Chinese is most useful for learning. They got expressions for all manner of situations that might present themselves. Confucius, Sun Tzu... Great men. Great thinkers. The expression from the Chinese that comes to mind is this: "Sometimes you have to kill a chicken to frighten a dog". You are loyal, Lucius, I respect that. But mark my words, I will not come after you. I will come after your brother.” (Folie-lex)
4. Laszlo: “I can see that you are angry with me, Sara.” Sara: “Angry? I'm not angry, Laszlo. The word "anger" doesn't do justice to what I feel. What you did was a violation of my trust, of our friendship.” (Folie-lex)

Blindspot -
1. Grigoryan: “I know this is bittersweet, but… Ivy was your last loose end. I hope you feel you've gotten some type of closure.” Jane: “Thank you. And for letting us… see this all the way through to the end.” Grigoryan: “Of course. You should all be very proud of the time you spent here. The legacy you leave behind will not be matched. For good… And bad. We thank you for your service.” (Maria Sol)
2. Patterson: “It's been rough these last five years. Harder than it should've been. So many ups… So many downs. I wouldn't have survived if it wasn't for you two.” Zapata: “Same.” Rich: “I would've been okay.” Zapata: “Rich…” Rich: “What? I'm being real, man, I'm a survivor.” Patterson: “I love you guys.” Zapata: “I love you too. And… You. Somehow.” Rich: “Wow, way to ruin a really nice moment.” Patterson: “Oh, wow, look who's talking.” Rich: “Okay. I love you both very much.” Zapata: “To family.” Rich/Patterson: “To family.” (Maria Sol)
3. Jane: “What are you thinking?” Kurt: “That we're lucky. It's a miracle that we're all sitting here together. One wrong turn… Cutting one wrong wire. Could've gone bad. So many ways. So many times. There's some world somewhere… where this dinner never happened.” (Maria Sol)

Perry Mason -
1. Della: “I suppose I should thank you.” Perry: “For what? Helping turn his suicide into a more insurance-friendly demise? Forget it.” Della: “It's very easy for you to break the rules, isn't it?” Perry: “Well, the way I see it, there's what's legal and there's what's right.” (Folie-lex)
2. Della: “Quite frankly I find it offensive that you choose to mask your intelligence and decency with cynicism and slothfulness.” (Folie-lex)
3. Perry: “I think it mattered to EB. I think that's why he chose his own terms. Wrote his own epitaph. "Here lies EB Jonathan. Defender of all the innocent. Righter of wrongs. All-around good guy". Unless you're talking to his son. Here's to all the shitty fathers in the world.” (Folie-lex)
4. Perry: “What do I know about the law?” Della: “More than you think.” Perry: “Or nothing.” Della: “Somewhere in the middle.” (Folie-lex)

Stargirl -
1. Henry King, Jr., to Wildcat: “I am sorry. (to Stargirl) “You're right. People are good. Don't let this change your mind.” (Chris and Folie-lex)
2. Rick: “Way to go, Court. You've just given away our identities to the enemy.” Courtney: “Henry's not the enemy.” Yolanda: “Yes, he is.” Henry: “Look, if it helps, she didn't tell me anything. I read her mind.” Courtney: “Which he's not going to do anymore.” Beth: “That's only polite.” (Chris and Folie-lex)
3. Pat: “And you know Mike, I don't know if I tell you this enough, but...-” Mike: “Don't get all shaky on me big guy. I'm gonna go pack a bag.” Pat: “Well, I love you.” (Folie-lex)
4. Pat: “No Courtney. That's it. It's over. It's my fault. Losing your mother, that'll hurt forever, alright? But I can love with it as long as I know you're both safe.” (Folie-lex)

United We Fall -
1. Brie: “You guys don't have a date night?” Jo: “We're married. We have a date life.” (Folie-lex)
2. Jo: “Babe, how is it that you don't trust your mom with our kids and she raised you?”
Bill: “I don't trust my mom with our kids because she raised me.” (Folie-lex)
3. Emily: “Why are you guys dressed like that? Did you win a boat?” Jo: “Actually we are going out on a date to prove to your Uncle Chuy that we're just as good as he is.” Bill: “Yeah. You'll do this to Lulu someday.” (Folie-lex)
4. Jo: “I kinda can't remember what we used to talk about before we had kids.” Bill: “I think we ran out of stuff, that's why we had the kids.” (Folie-lex)

Yellowstone -
1. Beth: “I've made two decisions in my life based on fear. And they cost me everything.” Rip: “Hey, not everything.” (Folie-lex)
2. Lloyd: “You can't teach that.” Monica: “Teach what?” Lloyd: “Toughness. You're either born a willow or you're born an oak. That's all there is to it.” (Folie-lex)
3. Roarke: “That land is not your family's legacy. It is a relic that will continue to appreciate until your family can no longer afford it, and then you will lose it. Wealth is the only legacy left and you know it. Fight us and you'll lose all your money and you lose the land. Or be the smart business woman you are and make us a deal that creates a real legacy for your family. Five, six hundred million dollars. Generational wealth.” Beth: “I agree on all fronts Roarke. I do. And I wish to God that he would do that, but he won't. So we fight.” (Folie-lex)
4. Kayce: “It's gonna be a shit show no matter what we do. May as well do it fast. Less time for things to go wrong.” John: “Your logic is so flawed, son, it... hell it almost makes sense.” (Folie-lex)

2020 Character Cup - Winner and Stats

2020 Character Cup Winner

Lexa

The 100

64 polls later and we have a winner! Congratulations to Lexa fans for voting her to the top. Although it was not a blowout like last year, Lexa grabbed the lead early and kept up momentum. With this, Lexa becomes the 9th winner of the Character Cup. Way to go, Lexa fans! She also had the highest number of total votes, more than double what Sam Winchester and Buffy Summers had combined. In addition, she had the top 2 votes per round. To become the winner, Lexa defeated Justin Foley, Riley Davis, Jethro Gibbs, Jamie Fraser, Buffy Summers, and Scylla Ramshorn. In second place is Scylla Ramshorn, who had the most nominations and therefore came into the Cup as the highest ranked. As a new character and with a second season of Motherland: Fort Salem already ordered, this may not be the last time we see her in the Cup. Congratulations to her fans for a well-played contest.

While the Championship round has a clear leader throughout, things could not have been tighter in the race for 3rd place. With the polls very close the entire time, the last push put Buffy Summers and Sam Winchester in a dead heat at 50% to 50%. In the end, it came down to less than 25 votes so the third place winner is...Buffy Summers. This is the third time that Buffy has taken third place. Sam Winchester takes fourth place, the highest he has ever ranked in the Cup.

As the winner, Lexa joins Jack from LOST, Dean and Castiel from Supernatural, Root and Shaw from Person of Interest, Alex Danvers from Supergirl, Lucifer Morningstar from Lucifer, and Temo Lopez from Mi Marido Tiene Más Familia in our Hall of Retired Winners.  Congratulations to The 100, Motherland: Fort Salem, The Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, and all other fandoms who supported their favorites. Our breakout character this year was Lois Lane from Smallville, who jumped 32 ranks to land in the #8 spot. Over in the Favorite Series Finale, The Good Place reigned supreme with LOST placing second.

Prediction Contest:

By correctly picking 46 polls and earning 84 points, NICK is the winner of the prediction contest. Congratulations! You earn bragging rights this year. Rn, our winner last year, took second place with 78 points and Psazzy and Lost Sensate both had 76 points.  Awesome job predicting all around.  Over in the wish list contest, Rn ranked highest with Lost Sensate and Ellys close behind.  (On a side note, this is the first time that my wish list ended up in the top 5.  Woo hoo!)

Thanks!!!

The Character Cup does not happen without the support of so many people. First and foremost, thanks to Andy for running SpoilerTV and hosting this contest every summer. If you haven’t been to SpoilerTV before the Character Cup, I urge you to stick around and try it out. Not only are hundreds of shows covered but the people who make up the STV community are knowledgeable, thoughtful, passionate, respectful, and eager to discuss. You will not find better, balanced conversation about TV anywhere online. It is my privilege to be a part of the STV team.

Special thanks also go out to Richard A. Murray, who once again spent his free time editing many of the pictures used in this contest. I very much appreciate all your work for the last four years and your willingness to help whenever I'm in a pinch. You are a lifesaver. Thanks also to ALL of the people who found pictures and videos, not only for their favorites but also other characters in the contest. I didn’t have to worry about finding pictures, which saved me hours. By being the awesome people you are, you cut my work in half and I can’t thank you enough.

Everyone knows that the TV Talk Topics are my favorite part of this contest and you didn’t disappoint. I loved talking TV with you this year. I appreciate everyone who shared their thoughts, whether it was every time, just once, or somewhere in between. You are the reason why so many people are drawn to SpoilerTV. I also very much appreciate everyone's feedback. You gave me a lot to think about before the 2021 Cup. A special thanks also to everyone who nominated topics. I’m sorry if we didn’t get to yours, but we now have a great mix of topics to start us out next year.

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who participated in any capacity. There is no contest without you. I appreciate your nominating, voting, discussing, mini-contest ideas, TV Talk Topics, spreading the word through social media, and sharing your thoughts. Once again, I had a blast during this contest and I can’t wait to see you next year for the 2021 Character Cup. It's one of my favorite parts of summer and a joy to participate with you.

2020 Character Cup - Finale

We’ve almost come to the end of the 2020 SpoilerTV Character Cup. It has gone by so quickly! With almost 400 people nominating, 550 characters nominated, and 64 characters in the Cup, we are now down to the final two: Scylla Ramshorn and Lexa. To get here, Scylla had to defeat Dexter Morgan, Caitlin Snow, Colleen Wing, Sara Lance, and Sam Winchester. For Lexa, it was Justin Foley, Riley Davis, Jethro Gibbs, Jamie Fraser, and Buffy Summers. Similar to last year, the races were closer than we usually get, ranging mostly in the 50’s and 60’s percentage-wise. Here’s hoping the race will be close this year and make for a great finale. Happy voting!

Over in the competition contest, Nick still leads with 84 points. Rn shoots up to second with 78 points and Psazzy and Lost Senate are in third with 76 points. Awesome job predicting! Also don’t forget to check out the TV Talk Topic. I do value your opinion. Before starting the contest this year, I looked back at the comments from last year to know what to change. Your feedback is important to me.

Finally, don’t forget. The Character Cup may be ending but the biggest contest at SpoilerTV is just about to start - the Favorite Show competition. All the previous contests have been leading up to this one, which takes place in August. According to Bradley, who runs it, nominations will tentatively run from Monday, August 3 - August 10 with the first rounds starting Friday, August 14. You don’t want to miss it!

Note: There is a third place poll for Sam Winchester vs. Buffy Summers. This will only determine which one is ranked #3 and which one is ranked #4.

2 TV Talk Topics:

TV Talk Topics: Character vs. Celebrity & Character Cup Wrap-Up -
1. Would you rather have a day to visit and get to know your favorite character or the actor who plays them? (Thanks to Lisa Roloff for the topic.)

2. I made several tweaks to the Cup this year. Please give feedback on how you feel about them. Thanks so much!

A. This year you were allowed to submit 5 nominees instead of the usual 4. Would you like to keep 5 or go back to 4?
B. On the second to last day of nominations, I posted a list of shows that had characters on the bubble for getting in. Would you like this to remain part of the process or do you think it gives shows an unfair advantage?
C. Last year, the biggest recommendation was to include character videos. Did you watch any? Should we include them next year? If yes, we had several characters who did not have any videos submitted. How could we get more characters covered?
D. Another popular suggestion was to allow people to see the votes before voting. Did you use this function this year? Should we keep it?
E. We decided last year that TV Talk Topics should be shorter with fewer details and less time intensive. How did they work for you this year?
F. This year 5 out of the 8 shows in the mini-contest had characters in the Cup. Should the mini-contest be open only to shows that are not in the Cup, those in the first round only, or stay the same (those up to round 2 only)?
G. Besides having your favorite win, what else would improve the Cup?

2020 Character Cup - Final Four (Round 5)

We're down to the final 4 and boy was the fourth round a doozy. Although Jamie Fraser had almost double the number of votes of any character going into the 4th round, he was defeated by Lexa, whose huge fanbase found the contest late in the round and massively tweeted it out. That's the power of social media in an internet poll. Things can change rapidly so don't forget to talk your favorites up. Thanks to all the Outlander fans who do such a great job promoting their show here at SpoilerTV. I appreciate your effort and best wishes in the Favorite Show contest.

Sara Lance and Chloe Decker also put up a valiant fight, keeping the score close the whole time. Also impressive was Lois Lane, who did better than I ever thought she would in this contest - going from barely getting in to one of the Elite Eight. Every contest we have one character that defies all odds and this year it is her. I'm sorry for all the fans saying goodbye to their favorites in the previous round. Your characters did very well and I hope to see them in the Cup next year. The mini-contest, for the most part, kept things close too. It's awesome to have closer votes towards the end.

In the prediction contest, Nick still leads with 45 correct picks. Psazzy is right behind him with 43 points and no name with 41. Congrats to you all. Well done! Also, a special shout-out of thanks to Richard A. Murray, who is again providing pictures for the last rounds of the contest. Thank you! You make my job easier. Stats will be updated in the next couple of hours so check the link to get your inner geek on. Until next time, happy voting!

TV Talk Topic:

Warning:   Here there be spoilers. Since we are talking about specific episodes or scenes, there are bound to be some spoilery things discussed. It makes no sense to me to block out the entire comments section with spoiler tags, so if you are going to get into specifics, please mark what show(s) you are talking about in the beginning so if it is a show where someone doesn’t want to be spoiled, they will know to skip it.

TV Talk Topic: Chills and Thrills - While we have discussed comedies and dramas many times in the Cup, we have never talked about those shows and episodes that make us turn on the lights and pull up the covers. What TV shows are the scariest? What episodes or scenes frighten you? (Thanks to Angela for this topic.)
