2019 Character Cup - Winner and Stats

2019 Character Cup Winner

Temo Lopez
Mi Marido Tiene Más Familia

64 polls later and we have a winner! Congratulations to the Aristemo fandom for voting Temo Lopez to the top. Unlike last year, the finale was a blowout with Temo leading right from the start and ending with 78% of the vote. With this, Temo becomes the first winner of the Character Cup from a non-English speaking TV show. Way to go, Temo fans! He also had the second highest number of total votes behind Leo Fitz. In addition, he was the character with the most votes in 4 of the 6 rounds. To become the winner, Temo defeated Jake Peralta, Leo Fitz, Sam Winchester, Villanelle, Lorelai Gilmore, and Aris Corcega. In second place is Jake Peralta, who increased both his character and show ranking. The last time Jake was in the Cup, he ranked 24th and before this, the highest Brooklyn 99 went was 8th.

While the Championship round was a blowout, things could not have been tighter in the race for 3rd place. With the polls very close the entire time, the last push put Leo Fitz and Chloe Decker in a dead heat at 50% to 50%. In the end, it came down to 5 votes so the third place winner is...Leo Fitz. Chloe Decker takes fourth place.

As the winner, Temo joins Jack from LOST, Dean and Castiel from Supernatural, Root and Shaw from Person of Interest, Alex Danvers from Supergirl, and Lucifer Morningstar in our Hall of Retired Winners. Congratulations to Mi Marido Tiene Más Familia, Brooklyn 99, Agents of SHIELD, Lucifer, and all other fandoms who supported their favorites. Our breakout character this year was Fallon Carrington from Dynasty, who jumped a whopping 52 ranks to land in the #9 spot. Over in the Favorite One-Season Show, Firefly reigned supreme as expected with Forever placing second.

Prediction Contest:

By correctly predicting Temo as the winner, Rn squeezed past Luana, who held onto first place for the longest time in the prediction contest. It's a fitting end to a contest with more 51% winners then ever. Rn made 42 correct predictions to Luana's 41. Congratulations and great predicting in a contest that went topsy turvy right from the first day. Coincidentally, Rn also had the most success with his wish list. Maria Sol was second in the wish list and Jess was third. For the record, my wish list was third from last, which is higher than I expected.

Thanks!!!

The Character Cup does not happen without the support of so many people. First and foremost, thanks to Andy for running SpoilerTV and hosting this contest every summer. If you haven’t been to SpoilerTV before the Character Cup, I urge you to stick around and try it out. Not only are hundreds of shows covered but the people who make up the STV community are knowledgeable, thoughtful, passionate, respectful, and eager to discuss. You will not find better, balanced conversation about TV anywhere online. It is my privilege to be a part of the STV team. Still left in our summer fun roster are the STV Awards, which you get to decide, and the Favorite Show Competition, our pinnacle contest and always an intense ride. You don’t want to miss them so stay tuned.

Special thanks also go out to Richard A. Murray, who once again spent his day off editing many of the pictures used in this contest. I very much appreciate all your work for the last three years and your willingness to help whenever I'm in a pinch. You are a lifesaver. Thanks also to ALL the people who found pictures, not only for their favorites but also other characters in the contest. I didn’t have to worry about finding pictures, which saved me hours. By being the awesome people you are, you cut my work in half and I can’t thank you enough. Thanks as well to Rn the Andrian for creating the 2019 Character Cup poster you see here. It turned out so well and I appreciate you spending all that time to create the poster and promote the contest. Thanks you!

Everyone knows that the TV Talk Topics are my favorite part of this contest and you didn’t disappoint. I loved talking TV with you this year. I appreciate everyone who shared their thoughts, whether it was every time, just once, or somewhere in between. You are the reason why so many people are drawn to SpoilerTV. I also very much appreciate everyone's feedback. You gave me a lot to think about before the 2020 Cup. A special thanks also to everyone who nominated topics. I’m sorry if we didn’t get to yours, but we now have a great mix of topics to start us out next year.

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who participated in any capacity. There is no contest without you. I appreciate your nominating, voting, discussing, mini-contest ideas, TV Talk Topics, spreading the word through social media, and sharing your thoughts on the topics or characters. Once again, I had a blast during this contest and I can’t wait to see you next year for the 2020 Character Cup. It's one of my favorite parts of summer and a joy to participate with you.

2019 Character Cup - Finale

The 2019 Character Cup has almost reached its end. After almost 400 character nominations and 64 contestants, we’re down to the final two: Temo Lopez and Jake Peralta. That means that a new show will crown its character, as Ben Linus (LOST), Sam Winchester (Supernatural), and Chloe Decker (Lucifer) are now out of the contest. To get here, Temo had to defeat Aris Corcega, Lorelai Gilmore, Villanelle, Sam Winchester, and Leo Fitz. For Jake, it was Marty Deeks, Magnus Bane, Clarke Griffin, Raymond Reddington, and Chloe Decker. Unlike previous Cups, both have struggled along the way with Temo getting 56% and 51% in two polls to advance. Jake’s were even closer with over half of his wins at 51%. Today should be another close one. Woo hoo!

Over in the prediction contest, things are also in a dead heat with Rn and Luana tied for first place. Today’s competition will determine whether Rn will take the lead and thus, the contest. Congratulations to both of you for your excellent predicting. Before voting commences, please look at and comment on today’s TV Talk Topic, even if you have not before. I need some feedback on what direction the Cup should go next year. Thanks! And now, let the finale begin. Good luck and happy voting!

Note: There is a third place poll for Leo Fitz and Chloe Decker. This will only determine which one is ranked #3 and which one is ranked #4.

TV Talk Topic: Character Cup Wrap Up

In 2014, when I restarted the Character Cup, the last TV Talk Topic was a review of the Cup itself. While we’ve gotten away from that in recent years, 6 years later, the Cup has changed and I’d like to revisit it. So I apologize for those who expected to talk TV today, but feel free to create your own discussion topic if you’d like.

Questions -
1. This is the first year that the prediction contest leaderboard and the brackets were posted daily at the bottom. Do you like them there or would you rather they be posted on the stats page? Did it make the page too long or bulky for those viewing on phones or other devices?

2. My favorite part of the Cup are the TV topics so that won’t change. However, I would like feedback. I know people, including me, found some topics to be too broad or time-intensive. Would you prefer topics to be narrow (have just 1 or 2 questions) or broad (multiple questions)? We also had several topic suggestions that were done in the last 2 years. How do feel about repeating topics? What would make the topics more engaging?

3. Both the prediction contest and the voting numbers were down this year. Should we continue to keep the prediction contest?

4. I purposely do not allow the vote percentage to be seen before people vote so as to not influence how people vote. However, that means that if you check the contest from a different device, you can not see the results until the polls are closed. Should we continue to keep the percentage blocked before voting or allow people to see it beforehand?

5. This is the first time in the Cup’s history that we’ve had a non-English speaking competitor. It’s also the first time that almost 10% of shows represented are not officially covered by SpoilerTV. These shows include: A Discovery of Witches, Like La Leyenda, Schitt’s Creek, Peaky Blinders, Mi Marido Tiene Más Familia, and El Corazón Nunca Se Equivoca. When this happened with POTM, it was decided to focus more on shows that SpoilerTV covered. Do you think that the Cup should only include official SpoilerTV-covered shows or should it remain open to all fandoms? What are the advantages and disadvantages of both?

6. How can we engage more people in the Character Cup next year?  What, besides your favorites winning, would make the Cup better?

2019 Character Cup - Final Four

Talk about a nailbiter! Of 8 polls, 5 of them ended with a 1% difference including ALL of Character Cup polls and 1 of the mini-contest polls. That has never happened before! Just goes to show you how close this contest really is. It truly is anyone’s game. Today decides which 2 characters and which 2 shows will be in the finals so pass the word and remember that it is, as always, one vote per person per poll. In the prediction contest, more congratulations to Luana who retains the lead for 3 days in a row with 41 points. The only person who can possibly beat that now is Rn, who has 40 points. Today’s first poll will determine if they go into the finals tied or not. It should be a great contest today, so vote your choice, pass the word, and, as always, happy voting!

2019 Character Cup - Round 4

Welcome to round 4. A big thanks to Rn for our 2019CC poster! It looks fantastic!

What started as 64 characters is now done to 8. Like last year, round 3 knocked out most of the female competitors with Villanelle, Kate Beckett, Fallon Carrington, The Doctor, Jessica Jones, Arya Stark, Sara Lance, and Clarke Griffin all leaving the contest. Again, several polls went down to the wire with 3 shows each separated by 1%. Here’s hoping that today’s polls are as exciting. In our prediction contest, Luana still holds the lead with 39 correct predictions. Way to go! If you are just joining us, the rules can be found in the links below. Please respect the one vote per person per poll rule.

In exciting news, our mini-contest begins today. Woo hoo! If you no longer have a character in the contest, hopefully one of your one-season favorites is competing. The rules work just the same as the regular Cup. Two shows will go head-to-head in the polls for around 24 hours. The one with the most votes proceeds to the next round. One vote per person per poll. Happy voting!

As round 2 ends, so do the nominations for our mini-contest. Thanks to everyone who nominated. We had over 200 show nominations and a lot more variety than I expected. Stay tuned to round 4, where the mini-contest will debut. There will be a substantial delay of several hours between when this round ends and the next begins. Over in the prediction contest, Luana continues to reign supreme with 4 out of the 6 polls correct. Congratulations! If you are just joining the contest, please check out the rules link below. TV Talk Topic: Storylines: They Did What?!?!

Warning: Here be spoilers. Since we are talking about storylines, some things are naturally going to be discussed. It makes no sense to me to block out the entire comments section with spoiler tags, so please mark what show(s) you are talking about in the beginning so if it is a show where someone doesn’t want to be spoiled, they will know to skip it.

The character is the heart of a show but the plot often drives the character. What are some of the best plot lines you’ve seen? Have your feelings for a character changed because of a plotline? Are there plotlines you’d like to see more or less of? What is the difference between a bad storyline and one that fans dislike because it is unpleasant and/or tragic? (Thanks to Ivana Cvetanovic for the topic idea.)

1. Alina: “Who is your contact?” Danny: “Wa enta Malak.” Alina: “That means ‘None of your business.’ “ Danny: “Oh. Does it?” Lexi: “That’s my bit. He…he just stole my bit.” (Jessica and Dahne)
2. Lexi: “Do you see what you’ve done to me? I’m all soft and weak now. I’m useless.” (Jessica)
3. Lexi: “The only time in my life that I’ve really been happy, truly happy, it’s been with you.” (Jessica)
4. Simon: “Suffice it to say, you cannot trust them.” Lexi: “And we can trust you.” Simon: “Well at least I’m upfront about being untrustworthy.”
5. Gwen: “I broke into Fabi’s apartment and I stole a bunch of secret files from his office. Father Chuck said I could do it.” Danny: “Wait ...what?”
6. Lexi: “You know, I always thought I would feel better when Farouk was dead, but I just feel numb.”

The Code -
1. Glenn: “I don’t know how to do this. I want to take some of the pain you’re in and make it mine, but I don’t know how and I...seems it doesn’t work like that. I see you here and I wish so many things for you and I don’t know how to do any of them and I’m not used to feeling that way. And I hate it, so I’m just trying to focus on the next thing that they tell us to do.
You will get better. You’ll feel better. You’ll make...you’ll make new plans and you will get back to your unit.” Adam: “Mom, the reason I was pushing myself so hard in rehab, it’s not so I can get back to my unit. I want to get out of here so I can take the medical separation.” Glenn: “You’re leaving the Marines?” Adam: “You know what I think about at night. How many people just like me have done a tour in this bed? I was 4 years old when we started fighting Afghanistan. How many legs have people like me given up? How many hands are gone? How many brains that don’t work? Did you read that the president’s talking about total withdrawal.” Glenn: “There’s different projections.” Adam: “The Taliban’s gonna be cutting people’s heads off in downtown Kabul inside of 6 months. My leg, all the other body parts we threw onto that bonfire, none of them meant anything. I don’t want any part of it, not anymore.”
2. Maya: “You never come out and say anything, Rami. You rule us all with the dark art of implication.”
3. Abe: “Mr. Ahmadi, welcome home.” Rami: “Thank you sir. All it took was complete and utter capitulation.” Abe: “Well, welcome to the Marine Corps. I have to say I pictured the moment of your return a little differently. Have you seen the end of An Officer and a Gentleman?”

Elementary -
1. Sherlock: “When my message reaches the appropriate parties, agents of the Crown will call that encrypted cell phone.” Watson: “Why give it to me?” Sherlock: “Because I trust you. And I want to show that I’m worthy of your trust in return. I lied to you once about Odin. I won’t do it again.”
2. Joan: “I mean, as a native New Yorker, it hurts to say but Boston has great teams pretty much across the board.”
3. Bell: “You really think she’s talking to her suppliers about her dogs?” Joan: “I don’t know. Pet owners will talk to anyone about their pets. Our mailman knows Clyde’s life story.”

Killjoys -
1. Johnny: "Did you give him the bad customer sugar?" Dutch: "Two scoops." (Prpleight)
2. Dav: "This is gonna be like punching toddlers. Can we just talk?" (Prpleight)

Reef Break -
1. Cat: “Just how crooked is your boss?” Petra: “Crooked enough to get things done on the Reef, but not so crooked that I can’t get up in the morning and go work for him.”
2. Jake: “Your running mate nearly got you killed. He would have let you die just to protect himself.” Petra: “Well he is a known quantity and for the moment, my necessary evil.” Jake: “Yeah well, back in my sunnier days, I’d have said that no evil was necessary.” Petra: “But now, not so sunny, huh?” Jake: “Oh, it’s getting brighter again.”
3. Dylan: “Man, Cambridge was a bad investment.”
4. Wyatt: “He’s been saying it for the past hour, I now know how to play dumb in Thai.”

2019 Character Cup - Round 2B

Well, round 2A was certainly exciting! Most of the polls remained very close the entire time, with the leads switching throughout. In the end the following characters prevailed: Temo Lopez, Villanelle, Sam Winchester, Kate Beckett, Fallon Carrington, Leo Fitz, Lucy Preston, The Doctor, Chloe Decker, and Jessica Jones. Let’s hope that today’s polls remain as interesting. Prevailing over the chaos is Luana, who has 38 points in the prediction contest. Congrats!

Today is the last day to nominate for the mini-contest and I encourage everyone to participate. We have quite the variety in our nominations so far. Also, if you are just joining us, please click the Rules link below. And as always, happy voting!

Mini-Contest Nominations:

For those of you who weren't with us previously, we added in a mini-contest 3 years ago to keep people engaged after their favorite characters were out. This gives everyone a fresh start and something new to root for. The mini-contest always starts in round 4 and you until these polls end to nominate. As always, any show still in the contest at round 4 is ineligible and we will only be doing English-speaking shows for this contest. Also, only one submission per person please. If you have any questions, head for the comments.

Originally, I wanted this year’s theme to be music-based but 2 years ago was Favorite Theme Song. Therefore, this year we are doing....Favorite One-Season Show. It doesn’t matter if it was cancelled or intended to end, it just has to be one season - no pickups in other places. Also, any new show that has been renewed for a second season is NOT eligible. UPDATE: Thanks to Prpleight for the clarification question. If a show regularly stars characters still in the Cup at round 4, it will be ineligible.

TV Talk Topic:

TV Talk Topic: When Backstage Drama Hits Center Stage

Today we were supposed to talk politics in TV, but since the discussion led that way yesterday, I’ve tweaked it to the rash of backstage bad behavior and scandal in the last few years. Bad behavior has always been a part of Hollywood but recently instead of covering it up, people have been held more accountable for their actions. How should networks deal with accusations of bad behavior? Should time (how long ago it happened) factor into things? Does an accusation against someone color their previous works for you? Is redemption possible? Are there any actors who would crush you if they were accused? Has bad backstage behavior affected any show you watch and how should networks handle the show as a whole if it is decided someone should be fired? How do you feel about characters being killed off because of an actor leaving or backstage drama? (Thanks to Alicia Norden for the topic idea.)
